Kayak Competency Course

Level 1

Weekend April 18/19 2014

Saturday 9 am to ~4 pm

(Jumping Creek – 24 A10 Melway)

Sunday 9 am to ~4 pm

So you have done the canoe course and now are looking to extend your skills on the water. The Bays Canoe Team is organising a Kayak Level 1 course on the Yarra where you will learn the skills to manoeuvre the Kayak and on the second day we hope to paddle down river and encounter some faster flowing water.

This two day course run by the Bays Canoe Team will give you the skills to paddle a kayak on flat or unbroken moving water. On the first day you will learn the skills to control and manoeuvre the Kayak in the water, along with rescue techniques and do’s and don’ts when Kayaking. On the second day after a recap of the skills learnt on the first day we will embark on a short journey and will take in some low grade rapids. The course starts at promptly at the time indicated (arrange to be there early to get ready) and will complete each day at approximately at the time indicated. At the completion of the course on the second day, those that have shown that they can control the kayak will be awarded with their anchor badge.

If you are interested in attending this course, please get in contact with Bays Canoe Team bookings via .

For the course you will need to bring along

  • **** A completed Personal Information Record. Without this you are not allowed on the water ***
  • At least 2 litres of water, each day
  • Food (Saturday snacks + lunch & Sunday snacks + lunch wrapped up to keep dry)
  • Sunscreen
  • A dry change of clothes for after kayaking
  • A towel
  • Clothing to wear while canoeing; layers of light clothing are preferable to one layer of heavy clothing to keep warm. Jeans are heavy and cold when wet. Tracksuit pants or shorts are a better alternative. Since this course is in Summer, clothing that covers your arms and legs is recommended, but be prepared should the weather change. Preferably clothes NOT made from cotton, which includes denim. Check the labels.
  • Wet weather gear if rain is forecast (a wind & water proof jacket)
  • An old pair of runners that can get wet, and extremely muddy, to wear while canoeing. Shoes need to be worn for the entire course.

The course starts from Jumping Creek, Warrandyte State Park, Warrandyte (Melway 24 A10) at 9am sharp. Please plan to be there at least 30 minutes early, as you will need to get yourself ready, select your PFD and helmet and unload the kayaks before 9am.

On the first day you WILL be getting wet as kayak rescue techniques have to be practiced. This will be at the end of the day.

The course fee is $20 (or $40 if your group does not have its own Kayaks), please bring this along to your leader.

Keep on paddling
